PROBLEM: 80% of children entering the first grade scored “high” on the self-esteem inventory. But by the fifth grade only 20% scored “high” and by the 12th grade only 5% (http://thejnpproject.com/hot-topics/kids-self-esteem-statistics/). Further exacerbating the problem, my target population of Wayne County is ranked 77th out of 100 North Carolina districts for educational performance (https://k12.niche.com/rankings/public-school-districts/best-overall/s/north-carolina/). Based on my Prudential Community Award-winning book “How to Primp Life,” I will develop a new comic and curriculum to bolster the confidence of girls aged 6-14 in North Carolina and beyond.

SOLUTION: #ThePrimpLifePlan is a is a comic and workshop series that illuminates the groundbreaking potential the target population holds through an influential character who empowers them to contribute meaningful and positive change to society via positive decision making. #ThePrimpLifePlan will be produced and distributed as a guide and workshop series in schools and organizations throughout North Carolina to bolster the confidence and self-image of girls ages 6-14 from under-resourced communities. Unlike, other children books, #ThePrimpLifePlan is the first comic in a series of motivational publications for young women in which it is made to tackle the root issue of the cycle of mediocrity prevalent in the educational culture of under-resourced communities.

IMPACT: #ThePrimplifePlan is inspired by the desire to want to see girls from an under-resourced community, like me, reach their full potential and overcome adversity. It is necessary for my target population to see a reflection of themselves achieving greatness. My commitment will allow these girls to see their full potential and overcome the statistics. This comic will also seek to put positive images of a forgotten community. I want the impact to allow these girls to always see a reflection of themselves going beyond to achieve greatness so they can replicate this in their daily lives as I know they can!

COMIC BOOK SERIES: Our author, Jasmine Jones, writes the motivational content of each and every graphic novel. The topics are not at random as they are chosen with the target population in mind in order to give them inspiring words and teach meaningful lessons in an entertaining format. Our talented illustrator translates these words into captivating images that allow these girls to see themselves through the character and scenery. Each comic book is apart of the #PRIMPING101 series and is tailored toward an adventure the main character, #Primpgirl, is currently going through. We also write mini series customized for specific age ranges within our target market (ages 6-8, 9-12, 13-15).

CURRICULUM GUIDE: Our comic books are also used for instructional purposes. As you all know #PrimpinAintEasy but #WeMakeItLookEasy by selling a curriculum guide based on the comic book series #Primping101. This curriculum is packed with lesson plans and step by step instructions on how to engage the target population with the comic book in order to learn the designated lesson (lessons range from self esteem, STEM, style, friendship, love, etc.). Each lesson contains a specific #Primpgirl adventure, activity, guidelines, evaluation sheets, and more.

WORKSHOP: The workshop is an integral part of #ThePrimplifePlan and is the last piece to the three way puzzle. The lesson plans that are included in the curriculum are played out in the form of a #Primplife workshop. Each workshop offers something different and can be filled with many great surprises. These workshops begin with a series of icebreakers to get the kids acquainted and end with the #PrimpItCircle, where everyone shares what they learned and something they liked about the workshop! At the end of each workshop there is an opportunity to purchase a comic book, activity book, t-shirts, and more if not purchased already. Workshops are conducted by trained facilitators or coaches that are already established in the environment of the target population (teachers, pastors, community leaders, etc.).
