Fros ARE NOT Elegant??

We're back to follow up with the intense controversy and beautiful embrace of support from breakout afro-latina artist, Amara La Negra! This topic was so important we had to write about it twice! In case your not in the loop check out our previous post!

Your Afro is beautiful. That is what many of us have to remember when turning on the television, and watching are idols walk the red carpet with their 18+ inch weave installments, as well as any woman of color considered for a part in a major movie role. The fro is not something that is unfortunately popularized as much as blonde, straight hair. We all know this. It’s the unspoken fact of American media, as well as any society that has Eurocentric ideologies affecting their beauty standards.
However this boy on Love Hip hop Miami had the audacity to not only state what we knew a predominantly white industry thought, but come out his mouth cross signing off on that idea that the fro is not elegant. Let’s ignore the fact that this man has tattoos on his face, trying to tell someone else what is/isn’t elegant, he has the nerve to denounce the essence of afro-latinas.
"You can't be elegant if you have a fro?"
I don’t know if he knows this is a show about hip hop per say, but he obviously forgot this is a predominately black crowd, he was feeling a little too comfy speaking in.
I get it. He probably has had one to many white passing Latina friends tell him his music is dope, and suddenly he feels as though his opinion was valid.
But let’s not forget, home-girl said so herself, "there is more than one type of Latina/Latino." But the question is, where are they at when representation is concerned?
The heat this scene is getting has definitely put home girl on the map, which is an automatic win for black culture. And just in case anyone else didn’t notice...she is black, so yes she is considered part of the culture!
She’s just a part of two cultures. Hence the hybrid term AFRO Latina. While i am sure there are many Latinas out there doing the mantra, “I’m not black, I’m (enter ethnicity).” We are here to tell you that you are welcome in this exclusive club of black girl excellence whenever you are ready to accept the skin you are in.
"Eres inteligente, eres hermosa y eres #blackgirlmagic."
As for this boy who will hopefully not make it past season 1, we have one thing we’re signing off with his ignorant statement of lies:
"POPULARIZE FROS AND FORMAL GOWNS."
